It took me awhile but I finally figured out I had read this book before. Everard's wife commits suicide and Lucy's father dies when they meet each other on one of Everard's walks. They seem to cling to each other which turns into love and then Everard starts his machinations. He wants what he wants how he wants and when he wants and he doesn't care about anybody but himself. His feelings are constantly hurt and Lucy is apologizing for every real or perceived slight. The ending is sad but I think if Lucy gets the strength to leave, at least she'll have her Aunt Dot. This book was frustrating because it was written as a frustrating book.
