Carolyn Cannot Live Without Books!

Hi, I'm Carolyn F and I've been an avid reader since elementary school when dinosaurs roamed the Earth (also known as the 1970's). My favorite genres change every five to ten years so who knows what it is now.

RAVEN CURSED by FAITH HUNTER

Raven Cursed - Faith Hunter

Audiobook

I enjoyed this book except for a just a few things.

1) Jane is running around in the morning saving people, goes to the hotel & changes, then immediately off to someone else, and then before she can get to her hotel another emergency. I know they somewhat converge at the end but it was still too much (in my opinion).
2) Beast is all about killing enemies, ripping out their throats, but then does an about face toward the end of the book. I didn't understand this change in her opinion.
3) So if Rick SPOILER [has sex with anyone the Grindie (sp?) will kill him?]

But beyond the above, very good book, very good narrator. I'm planning on working my way through the entire series.

CAT AMONG PIGEONS by AGATHA CHRISTIE

Cat Among the Pigeons - Agatha Christie

Audiobook

The story reminded me a lot of a Josephine Tey book. I wonder who wrote it first. I enjoyed it. Hugh Fraser was the narrator. He did his normal wonderful job.

DIAMOND FIRE by ILONA ANDREWS

Diamond Fire - Ilona Andrews

I enjoyed this story a lot. It's about Catalina and how she's trying to help her sister with her upcoming wedding, trying to get along with Nevada's soon to be family, trying to figure out how/when to use her powers, and figure out where an aquamarine stone went. Really good.

WORLDWIRED by ELIZABETH BEAR

Worldwired - Elizabeth Bear

This book took me a long time to read because I checked it out, didn't finish in time, and then came back months later.  I think this was a detriment to the book or actually my feelings about the book.  I really wasn't enjoying it when I came back to finish it.  I hate the love triangle even though everyone gets along.  And Richard was getting a lot irritating.  Not my favorite of the series.

THE LAKE HOUSE by KATE MORTON

The Lake House: A Novel - Kate Morton

This book was so full of twists and turns that I kept thinking I had figured it out, then I was wrong, then I really figured out this time, and so on and so on. SPOILER At first I thought the baby was the nanny's son and she had taken him to Canada. Then I thought it was Deborah's son after a liaison with the gardener that her mother was raising. Then I thought the middle daughter somehow gave the gardener an idea to kidnap the baby for ransom and then accidentally killed him. I thought the dad in a fit of PTSD accidentally killed the baby which I pretty much figured out right away he didn't do. Finally, 2/3 of the way into the book I figured out what happened.

The ending was a little over the top Happy Ever After but not enough to make me not like the book.

COLD WELCOME by ELIZABETH MOON

Cold Welcome - Elizabeth Moon

Another book that ended with a cliffhanger, which I'm not enjoying at this time. This is the second book I've read recently that does so. The story does drag a bit while they are in the cave/station, but otherwise I enjoyed it. My one complaint is SPOILER!! [it took them forever to reach the outside when they went through the tunnels and it seemed it took the baddies only a day even with self-locking/closing doors and the last door being extremely thick. How can the baddies be able to easily explode through doors that thick in mere minutes? For as long as the journey took Ky and the survivors (way too long in my opinion), the ease with which the villains went through them like tissue paper was unrealistic.

COMPETENCE by GAIL CARRIGER

Competence - Gail Carriger

Audiobook

Quirky funny book, like all of the other books I've read by the author. Very enjoyable. New kind of supernatural introduced. Slow moving romance came to fruition. I recommend the book/series.

THE MAN WHO FOLDED HIMSELF by DAVID GERROLD

The Man Who Folded Himself - David Gerrold

Here are the two comments I made while reading the book:

I am getting real sick of this book - all these what ifs and how many people there are. I'm close to done with it so I'll more than likely finish it but I am definitely giving it a bad rating.
and
There's an awful lot of male giggling in this book. I'm just saying . . .

So, when I first started reading the book I thought it was really good. And then there were so many what-ifs that it was ridiculous. That's when I was getting sick of the book. Then it started getting good again and I really enjoyed the ending.

I'm giving a 3-1/2 star rating because of that later redemption.

As an aside, I saw the book was published in the 1970s but there's reference to CDs and I thought did they have some giant version of a CD back then? Then they mentioned the twin towers and I went back again to see that it really was published in the 1970s. I don't know if the author amended the book without really a reference to the amendment to make the reader think he went back in time to add later events but whatever, it worked. :)

ILLUMINAE by AMIE KAUFMAN & JAY KRISTOFF

Illuminae - Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman

Audiobook

I liked this book up until the ending and then it was "give me a break". Not believable at all! It's made me second guess reading the rest of the series. 3-1/2 stars for most of the book, it would have been 4 stars without the ending.

CAT TALES by FAITH HUNTER

Cat Tales - Faith Hunter

Anthology. 4.125 is the average star.

The Early Years - This is the first time Jane changes when she leaves the orphanage. Short but sweet. 3-1/2 stars.

Cat Tats. This story explains how and why Rick got his cat tattoos. Really sad story. 4 stars

Kits. A story about how Jane and Molly became friends. 4 stars.

Blood, Fangs, and Going Furry. This story happens right after Mercy Blade and is about Jane tries to help Rick. 5 stars.

THE GOOD HOUSE by ANN LEARY

The Good House - Ann Leary

Audiobook

I had to come to terms with the fact that this book is about a woman with problems and the people around her. There's no big mystery, really no big A-Ha! moment, although there is a coming to terms at the end. For a moment I thought there was going to a murder, but it was all my imagination. Good book, great narration.

CODE OF CONDUCT by KRISTINE SMITH

Code of Conduct - Kristine Smith

I was a lot confused reading this book. I had the short-story prequel and really liked it. This is 15-ish years later. I'm not exactly sure what/who the female protagonist is - ex-soldier, document reviewer, alien, cyborg. The main bad guy (there are many) for this story wasn't really a surprise. Even though I'm confused, I still enjoyed the book. So I'm reading the rest of the series.

MERCY BLADE by FAITH HUNTER

Mercy Blade: Jane Yellowrock, Book 3 - Audible Studios, Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam

Audiobook

Each book in this series gets better and better. A little cliffhanger of an ending. They had a little of the next book in the series after this audiobook was finished that I hoped would say what happened next. But nope, it was a few days/months(?) later. I'm so interested in what is happening next that I'm going to read all of the novellas between this book #3 and the next #4. I think there are about 4-5 novellas. Good book/series.

BLOOD BINDS THE PACK by ALEX WELLS

Blood Binds the Pack - Alex Wells

3-1/2 stars and that's because the strike part went on way too long. I think at least 50-100 pages in the middle could have been removed and made the book a better read. But I kept persevering and finally finished it. Whew! It was a close thing to me just moving on but the last maybe 8th of the book finally started speeding along. The plot moved forward, the battles were more than skirmishes, and potential relationships finally went somewhere. So because of the ending I went up from 3 to 3-1/2 stars.

BLACK RABBIT HALL by EVE CHASE

Black Rabbit Hall - Eve Chase

Audiobook

This felt like a Gothic novel. SPOILER!! [A matriarch dies and the family falls apart especially when the dad remarries. (The new wife)] She tries to be just as beloved but her jealousy just makes things worse and she does and says nearly unforgivable things. This is more a young adult romance book which I'm usually just okay with but I ended up liking this book a lot. 4 stars

THE LAST TRIBE by BRAD MANUEL

The Last Tribe - Brad Manuel

Audiobook

I sometimes like my apocalyptic books to be a little less murder, rape and pillage and this book was exactly that. I'm hoping the author will write a follow-up book just to see if they were able to rescue more people and because I enjoyed this book a lot. There are some unbelievable parts like what the former jobs were for key people. What a wonderful coincidence! But even with that, I loved the book.
