Carolyn Cannot Live Without Books!

Hi, I'm Carolyn F and I've been an avid reader since elementary school when dinosaurs roamed the Earth (also known as the 1970's). My favorite genres change every five to ten years so who knows what it is now.

GLASS HOUSES by LOUISE PENNY

Glass Houses - Louise Penny

Audiobook

While I still love this series, I feel the hiding crucial information from your superiors for the better good is a repeat of a different book in this series. And I feel this idyllic village has turned into the highest murder per residents village in all of the world. There are so many murders that happen here. Yes, I know that I'm reading a murder mystery, but maybe the author could take us on another road trip without the residents for once so that they wouldn't eventually feel that Armand Gamache is a curse and not a blessing in their lives. Just a thought.

MAGIC IN THE WIND by CHRISTINE FEEHAN

Magic in the Wind - Christine Feehan

I am reading this as part of the anthology Lover Beware

After reading some of this series, I already knew about this couple - the first sister Sarah and Damon. The story itself was okay. 3 stars.

RAISING STONY MAYHALL by DARYL GREGORY

Raising Stony Mayhall - Daryl Gregory
Audiobook

3-1/2 stars

I liked the beginning and the end but the middle was bogged down by torture seemingly with a smile that went on way too long. But taking in the beginning, some of the middle, and the ending, the book was really good. The narrator David Marantz did a great job.

THE SPACESHIP NEXT DOOR by GENE DOUCETTE

The Spaceship Next Door - Gene Doucette, Steve Carlson

Audiobook

This is a sci-fi book with zombies but they're good zombies (eventually). It's also a young adult book with Annie outsmarting someone which should not be possible. That's kind of where I stopped liking the book, right at the end. I will say the book did drag a little in the middle and I figured out pretty much from the start who the different person was. I think the author could have just had sleepwalkers instead of zombies because zombies added absolutely nothing to the story in my opinion. So, an average book gets an average rating.

GHOST SEER by ROBIN D. OWENS

Ghost Seer - Robin D. Owens

So predictable. I could have written the plot myself and I'm not a writer. The romance was strange - he liked her, he didn't, he liked her again. She let him make all the decisions regarding whether they saw each other or not which was really not satisfying. The ending was a little sappy. But if you're in the mood for a predictable, feel good, happy ending book with paranormal aspects, then this is the one for you!

WOULD-BE WITCH by KIMBERLY FROST

Would-Be Witch - Kimberly Frost

Wow, I just did not enjoy this book at all. The main character is just walked all over by seemingly everyone and just takes it. When she finds out who did her wrong or confronts people who are overly mean, she does pretty much nothing except mumble under her breath. Now, if it were me, there would be a HUGE amount of swearing, some cake throwing or whatever is handy, maybe hair pulling and scratching faces of a certain someone in this book - but definitely the first two. I didn't care for anybody in this book.

GOOD COUNSEL by EILEEN WILKS

Good Counsel - Eileen Wilks

A deleted scene about Cullen meeting with the priest before his marriage. I don't know if it would have added much to the book, but I liked it and wish it would have remained there.

HEART OF ICE by HAILEY EDWARDS

A Heart of Ice - Hailey Edwards

I had started this story a while ago and thought spiders - yuck. And then stopped reading. But I started it again and really liked it. Short and sexy story.

ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY by DAVID SEDARIS

Me Talk Pretty One Day - David Sedaris

Audiobook

Most of this book was really good, kind of sad sometimes. However, the story about his drug addiction and how he became an alternative artist wasn't very funny or sad or really interesting and it went on too long. But other than that, enjoyed the book a lot.

CLAIMED BY THE ALIEN PRINCE by NANCEY CUMMINGS

Claimed by the Alien Prince: Alpha Alien Romance (Alpha Aliens of Fremm Book 1) - Nancey Cummings

This book was okay. I'm not usually hung up on editing problems and I didn't ding this book because of them, however, they were irritating because it seems that a once over read before publishing would have corrected many of them.

The story itself was okay. A little wam/bammy but it's a short story so that's expected.

A WITCH WITH NO NAME by KIM HARRISON

The Witch with No Name - Kim Harrison

Audiobook

I'm glad this series is over because with this last book it ends on a highish note. There was the constant fugue state Rachel was in, with people shaking her, clearing their throats, etc. to get her to either wake up or pay attention. And I got real tired of her constant second guessing whether she was good for Trent. Ugh! Either stay or go - this back and forth was exhausting for me and I'm not a fictional character this is happening to! In addition, there was constant second guessing that went on with practically every decision Rachel had to make so put that on top of my other complaint. I thought the ending put a few toes over the mooshy marshmallow sweetness happy-ever-after ending, but the author drew herself back before I got dizzy from rolling my eyes. I'm giving it a generous (to me) 3-1/2 stars, which I didn't ding down further just because it was the last book in the series.

SIDESWIPED by KIM HARRISON

Sideswiped - Kim Harrison

I am sitting here trying to think about what I want to say about the story. It was confusing, tried to be heartbreaking, really geared toward young adults. I like this author but I'm not sure I'll like this series. So, I'm going to stop here until/if I change my mind.

WHITE TRASH ZOMBIE UNCHAINED by DIANA ROWLAND

White Trash Zombie Unchained - Diana Rowland
Such a good book. This series is consistently good but this book exceeds the previous books a little which is really unusual. I loved the zombiegators. The romance was okay, but not really understandable on the guys part, especially in this book. But overall a really great book/great series.

EXCELLENT WOMEN by BARBARA PYM

Excellent Women - Barbara Pym, Jayne Entwistle

Audiobook

This book was sweet, kind of meandering for a while, and the ending left me a little confused. SPOILER [Was that a proposal or not? (hide spoiler)] I think this is the first time I've read this author. I went through a period only reading classics about 20-25 years ago and there was no Goodreads to keep track of what I read back then.

UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD by SARAH LYONS FLEMING

Until the End of the World - Sarah Lyons Fleming
I'm a sucker for a good zombie book and this was very good. A pretty big HEA but that's forgivable especially with the awful (meaning bad stuff happening) endings that I've been reading lately. I'm planning on reading the rest of the series.

MY NOT SO PERFECT LIFE BY SOPHIE KINSELLA

My Not So Perfect Life - Sophie Kinsella

Audiobook

Cute story with some romance and figuring who is being mean. I loved the step-mother and father. If you like a light book with a little sadness thrown in, this is the book for you.
